I've recently been given the task of creating a set of linux user accounts with predetermined passwords. This is easier said than done, because the useradd, adduser, and usermod commands only accept passwords that are encrypted instead of in plaintext. They require the password to be encrypted with the unix crypt() function, which doesn't have a command-line executable, AFAIK. It turns out that a really easy way to encrypt a string is to use the openssl command:
openssl passwd <your plaintext password>
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

This is a good subject to talk about. Sometimes I fav stuff like this on Redit. This article probably won’t do well with that crowd. I will be sure to submit something else though.
