Hmmm...I just downloaded the Maven distro from maven.apache.org, unzipped it, and then added the bin directory to my path. Less than 5 minutes of effort.

This is a little different because it installs it in the system for all users. Also, once you have MacPorts installed it is easy to install a bunch of other stuff.
